Citizen Investment Trust earnings growth led by fee income

Fee-led growth lifted annual profit, but weaker book value tempers the improvement in per-share returns.

Nepsense Markets ·

Citizen Investment Trust reported annual profit of Rs 1.35 arba, up 7.7%, as fee and commission income increased 8.4% over the year. The filing covers the full fiscal year to Ashadh, not the fourth quarter alone.

Why it matters: earnings are growing, but the fall in book value points to pressure on the balance-sheet cushion behind that growth.

Earnings read

Total revenue reached Rs 2.25 arba, up 7.3% year on year, with interest income rising 8.1% and fees and commissions remaining the larger income stream. EPS advanced 2.6% to Rs 19.84, a slower pace than profit growth. Return on equity, the key profitability ratio for this investment company, improved by 1.23 percentage points to 13.01%.

The increase in both income streams helps explain the profit gain, while the smaller EPS increase reflects growth in paid-up capital, which was up 5%. The result therefore shows improved returns on equity, but less pronounced growth for each share.

Balance sheet and peers

Total assets expanded 19% to Rs 370.28 arba, while investments rose 13.3% to Rs 327.62 arba. Yet total equity declined 2.5%, as the reserve fund fell 14.2%; book value per share was down 7.2% to Rs 152.47. That divergence between asset growth and equity measures is a counterweight to the stronger income and profit trend.

CIT’s 13.01% ROE compares favorably with NIFRA’s 3.9%, while CEDB Holdings recorded a higher 22.74% ROE and 10.2% profit growth. CIT’s profit rose as several peers reported declines, including NIFRA, whose profit fell 14.4%. The peer picture supports CIT’s relative earnings resilience, though profitability varies widely across these investment-related companies.

Tape and next test

CIT closed at Rs 1,732 on 26 October, down 0.17% on the session. It gained 1.52% over five sessions but was down 0.17% over 20 sessions. Just 1,763 shares traded, so the short-term rise has not been accompanied by heavy activity. The close was below the 52-week high of Rs 1,913 and above the low of Rs 1,621.1.

The next test is the next quarterly filing, with the AGM and any book-closure notice also relevant. What would change the picture is evidence that investment growth is sustaining profit and EPS gains while reserves and book value stabilize.
