HIDCL profit falls 30.2% as finance income drops

Profit fell 30.2% as lower finance income outweighed a modest rise in contract revenue, leaving earnings under pressure.

What the year showed

Hydroelectricity Investment and Development Company reported full-year net profit of Rs 67.93 crore, down 30.2%, as finance income fell 28.7% to Rs 99.1 crore. Why it matters: the result leaves earnings more exposed to income from the investment portfolio than to the company's smaller contract-revenue stream.

Total revenue declined 27.7% to Rs 1.03 arba, even as revenue from contracts with customers rose 6.3% to Rs 2.67 crore. EPS fell 31.2% to Rs 2.73, while return on equity dropped 1.03 percentage points to 2.42%, the clearest measure of the weaker earnings conversion. The Rs 13.24 crore earned in the latest quarter alone was not enough to reverse the annual decline.

Balance sheet and peers

Total assets were broadly stable at Rs 28.83 arba, up 0.1%, while total equity slipped 0.6% to Rs 28.08 arba. Reserves and surplus fell 14.6% to Rs 3.15 arba despite a 1.5% increase in paid-up capital to Rs 24.93 arba. Current liabilities rose 159.2% to Rs 51.55 crore, while current assets stood at Rs 15.85 arba. Book value declined 2.1% to Rs 112.65, showing that the modest increase in capital did not translate into stronger per-share balance-sheet support.

The return profile trails the closest infrastructure comparison. HIDCL's 2.42% ROE is below NIFRA's 3.9%, while NIFRA's profit decline was less severe at 14.4%. HIDCL also sits at a price-to-book ratio of 2.21, close to NIFRA's 2.09, despite the sharper fall in profit. CEDB Holdings, by contrast, reported a 22.74% ROE and 10.2% profit growth, underscoring the gap between HIDCL's current earnings momentum and stronger investment peers.

Tape

HIDCL closed at Rs 257.5 on 28 October, up 2.22% on the session and 2.18% over five sessions, although it remained down 1.72% over 20 sessions. Turnover was Rs 1.49 crore across 242 trades. Buyers paid up, accounting for 67.4% of initiated trades, with buying steady into the close and the price ending 0.45% above the session's average. The flow was mixed rather than dominated by a few participants: the largest prints were split between buyers and sellers, while the top three buyers represented 41.8% of buying against 32% for the top three sellers.

Next test

The next test is the following quarterly filing, which will show whether finance income stabilises and whether the lower ROE begins to recover. What would change the picture is renewed growth in finance income alongside firmer EPS; without that, the near-flat asset base leaves the stock trading against a weaker earnings trend.
